ISO Standards Commonly Requested in Tenders

In short

ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 45001 (health and safety) and increasingly ISO 42001 (AI management) are the standards most often requested in UK tenders, either as a mandatory requirement or as evidence of an equivalent management system.

Mandatory or equivalent?

Buyers must usually accept equivalent arrangements. If you are not certified, describe the documented management system you operate, who audits it and how nonconformities are closed.

Sequencing certification

Certification takes months, not weeks. Prioritise the standard your target buyers ask for most often rather than collecting badges.

Frequently asked questions

Which ISO should an SME get first?

Usually ISO 9001, unless you handle client data at scale, in which case ISO 27001 unlocks more opportunities.
