A practical guide to understanding what the University of Salford really wants and how to build a winning response.

It's not about pests. It's about peace of mind.

When I look at this tender, I see more than just pest control.

The University of Salford is looking for assurance.

They want to know their estate is protected from any disruptions pests might cause.

Yes, they're asking for pest control services across their campus.

But what they're really buying is peace of mind for their staff, students and visitors.

That's where I'd focus my attention.

Think about the students and staff

The university isn't just buildings.

It's a living, breathing community of students, lecturers and support staff.

Their daily experiences matter.

Imagine a lecture being disrupted by a pest issue.

Or a student finding pests in their accommodation.

These are the scenarios the university wants to avoid.

I'd make sure my response shows a deep understanding of this community and their needs.

Pay attention to what they say

The notice is clear about the importance of the service across the "University Estate".

They’re not just looking at individual buildings.

The whole campus matters.

From lecture halls to student accommodations and communal areas.

They're asking for a service that covers it all seamlessly.

I'd make sure my submission highlights my capability to deliver consistent service across multiple sites.

Evidence always beats promises

One thing I noticed when I worked in the public sector was that almost every bidder promised excellence.

Few could prove it.

If you have evidence, use it.

  • Testimonials from similar institutions
  • Case studies of past successes
  • Performance data that illustrates reliability

Evidence always carries more weight than promises.

Consistency over the contract term

This contract isn't just about starting strong.

It's about maintaining standards over the whole term.

I'd be looking to see how you plan to manage staffing levels, especially during peak times like term starts.

How will you ensure coverage if someone is on leave or calls in sick?

That's where a lot of contractors fall short.

Consistency is key.

Don't just focus on the pests

Yes, you're dealing with pests.

But the university is focused on outcomes.

They want a safe, clean environment.

I'd talk about proactive measures.

Regular inspections, preventative treatments and rapid response to any issues.

That's what they're really interested in.

Show how you'll make life easier for the University

This is something I think suppliers often overlook.

Every contract creates work for the client.

The best contractors reduce that workload.

If I were writing this tender, I'd be explaining how my management processes make life easier for university administrators.

One thing I'd keep reminding myself

Remember who you're trying to convince.

It's not just the procurement team.

It's the university community.

Students, faculty and support staff.

Every answer should be tested against this question: "How does this benefit them?"

Common mistakes

Avoid submissions that:

  • Focus too much on technical jargon
  • Ignore the university's community and their daily needs
  • Overpromise without backing up claims with evidence
  • Fail to address consistency over the contract term
  • Neglect preventative measures and rapid response plans
  • Lack clear management processes to ease the client's workload

My Final Thoughts

The University of Salford is looking for more than pest control.

They're looking for a partner who can provide peace of mind for their community.

This contract is valued at £90,000.

That tells me they’re serious about quality.

Price is important, but it's not the only factor.

I'd focus on showing the value you bring through consistency, evidence and understanding of their unique needs.

Thanks for reading.

I hope this guide has helped make public procurement feel a little less daunting. If it has, then it's done its job.
